Anna Zemánková (1908-1986) was a self-taught Czech artist. In the early 1960s, at the age of over fifty, she took up artistic practice for the first time when suffering from depression. It was in the early pre-dawn hours between four and seven o’clock, in silence and solitude, and before devoting herself to domestic duties, when she created her bizarre and mystical herbarium of flowers and plants on paper. Characteristic of her work is a phenomenally complex combination of ink, pastel, perforations, and textile threads, creating a feverish and ominously beautiful botanical world of shapes.

Anna Zemánková received recognition for her art, particularly among fellow artists. although it was difficult to exhibit publicly when Czechoslovakia was under Soviet influence. Works by Anna Zemánková were exhibited the seminal exhibition “Outsiders,” curated by Roger Cardinal and Victor Musgrave,in 1979 at the Hayward Gallery in London. In 1987, a year after her death, the Serpentine Gallery in London showed her work in a group exhibition. Her work is represented in major collections such as the Prinzhorn Collection (Germany), the Collectie De Stadshof (Netherlands), and Jean Dubuffet’s Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne (Switzerland).

It has been shown at the Venice Biennale (2013), the Collection de l’Art Brut (2016) and is currently being shown in three museum shows: Extravaganza, Centro de Arte Oliva, São João da Madeira (Portugal), Flying High: Women Artists of Art Brut at Kunstforum Wien (Austria), and Gewächse der Seele: Floral Fantasies between Symbolism and Outsider Art, Sammlung Prinzhorn, Heidelberg (Germany).

Anna Zemánková (1908-1986) war eine autodidaktische tschechische Malerin und Zeichnerin. In den frühen 1960ern, mit über fünfzig Jahren, wendete sie sich erstmals dem künstlerischen Schaffen zu, nachdem sie an einer Depression erkrankte. Obwohl sie gelernte Zahntechnikerin war, widmete sie sich tagsüber, wie damals üblich, den häuslichen Pflichten. Zum künstlerischen Arbeiten blieben ihr die frühen Morgenstunden zwischen vier und sieben Uhr, in denen sie in Stille und Einsamkeit ein bizarres, mystisches Herbarium von Blumen und Pflanzen auf Papier erschuf. Charakteristisch für ihr Werk ist eine Kombination aus Tusche, Pastell, Perforierungen und Textilfäden, mit der sie eine fieberhafte und bedrohlich schöne botanische Welt heraufbeschwört.

Anna Zemánková erhielt Anerkennung für ihre Kunst, vor allem unter Kollegen. Allerdings war es schwierig, öffentlich auszustellen, als die Tschechoslowakei unter sowjetischem Einfluss stand. Werke von Anna Zemánková wurden 1979 in der Hayward Gallery in London in der von Roger Cardinal und Victor Musgrave kuratierten wegweisenden Ausstellung “Outsiders” gezeigt. 1987, ein Jahr nach ihrem Tod, zeigte die Serpentine Gallery in London ihre Arbeiten in einer Gruppenausstellung.
